THE VALUE OF CLEAR THINKING
...the broad story holds, for it is founded in a dominating simplicity.
-Winston S. Churchill, A History of the English Speaking Peoples
There is blunt truth in the old saying that the prospect of being hanged focuses the mind. We have noted of late that many of those who face bankruptcy and poverty have had their minds sufficiently focused that they have begun to question long-held beliefs.
Recently we had a conversation with an old friend, a diehard liberal, whose business was struggling and who was staring at the dark abyss of an impoverished old age. He complained that he didn't understand economics and said how much luckier we were because we did.
"Luck had very little to do with it," we told him. Listening to Ron Paul for many years had sharpened our wits about financial matters. We had seen the crash coming and had taken steps to protect ourselves. Geniuses we are not, but once one understands the basic truths about money and morality, about tyranny and freedom, the future becomes more knowable.
Many of these truths are embodied in what is known as the Austrian school of economics, a branch of economic theory that is actually easy to understand because it is based on common sense and history, not on rarified academic and political notions of "what ought to be."
Ron Paul has been talking about this for years. He has warned us of foreign entanglements, the bad effects of public debt, and the dangers of a home-grown tyranny. At long last, people are listening. Even that citadel of petrified group-think, the New York Times, has discovered Rep. Paul. Their recent profile generated huge amounts of internet traffic.
Here's the NYT story: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/13/us/politics/13paul.html
And here's a good page about Paul: http://www.ronpaul.com/
So in this season of hope, we offer some: Ron Paul is being taken seriously. Maybe, just maybe, the country is awakening from its long dumb slumber and will someday return to the Founder's vision of Prosperity, Peace, and Goodwill To Men.
