"Nationalize as much as possible, even the currency, so as to make men love their country before their states. All private interests, all local interests, all banking interests, the interests of individuals, everything, should be subordinate now to the interest of the Government."

Who said it?

A) Karl Marx
B) FDR
C) Rep. Barney Frank
D) Homer Simpson
E) Senator John Sherman, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee during the Civil War.

Yes, it was Sen. Sherman, brother of the General William Tecumseh Sherman. He was speaking in support of Lincoln's move to print paper "Greenbacks" to finance the war. Since the greenbacks were not directly redeemable in gold, their value moved up and down on the open (free) market depending on events and speculation.
